TAKAI JUEMON 高井十右衛門
Founded by Yasuda Mataemon Minamoto Mitsuhiro, a descendant of the Seiwa Genji clan, Koju was founded in Kyoto at the beginning of the Tensho era and served the Imperial Palace.
The fourth generation Koju was summoned by Tokugawa Ieyasu and traveled between Sunpu and Edo, establishing the family name in Kyoto.
Takai Juemon, who inherited the Koju family name during the Edo period, was a master incense maker known in the tea ceremony world as Juemon the Incense Maker. His Koju famous incense (kneaded incense), including "Chitose," presented to Emperor Kokaku, is recorded in many of its names, and he has continued to supply the heads of various tea schools.
As the eighth generation owner, he wrote "Koju Takai Juemon: Notes on the Blending of Incenses," which passes on his techniques and philosophy to the present day.
